The Image Sensor: A Great Addition to Your System

Rapid, vibrant photos are all the rage these days; ask anyone who’s an avid social media user. Now, even your home security system can send an instant, high definition image to your phone or email. It’s all possible with an image sensor, a device made available exclusively by the manufacturer of our home security systems.

What is an image sensor?

An image sensor is a smart device you can opt to integrate with your security system. It combines motion sensor technology with a traditional, single image camera, giving you the same interactive control you have with video security technology in a still image format.
Just like video security, the image sensor can intelligently detect and capture activity in whatever room it’s in, no matter the light level, and send the image to you in the form of a phone alert or email. But unlike a video clip, a still image can be viewed in an instant – making it less disruptive if you’re in a meeting at work, a quiet public event, or driving on the road.

What event should you program the image sensor for?

When the image sensor takes a photo is up to you. One strategy is to set it up for specific times of day, when certain events you need to check on will typically happen. A few ideas of times you can set it up to take a snapshot include:
  • Their kids’ afterschool arrival time
  • The time the dog walker is scheduled to come by
  • Your housekeeper’s weekly start or stop time
Some people opt to use the image sensor instead of video for the purpose of a nanny cam. It’s a less intrusive way to check on caregivers, enabling you to get a quick snapshot during the kids’ meal time, play time or TV time.

How else can you use image sensor?

Programming your system to take these photos at certain times is just one way to use the image sensor in your system. Because of the motion detector, you can also program it to take images triggered by motion – or, when any of your other smart security devices (like the door contact sensor or smart lock) are activated.
